U.S. Soccer: A Spike Lee Joint

For NPR.org’s World Cup soccer blog, “Show Me Your Cleats!

I just experienced all I’ll ever need from sports.

I work nights now, so today’s 10 a.m. U.S.A.-Algeria match finally fit my schedule. I decide against the new Brooklyn soccer bar that I’ve been wanting to get to. My roommate said the place was jammed for the game against Slovenia. She couldn’t get in the door. So I head back to the same bar I watched the Champions League final in.

I walk in and everyone has scooped up all the seats, so I wander back to the projection screen where a bunch of tables are set up. I find the only open one and sit down. I look up at the screen, then I have a look around the room. I want to gauge who I’ll be watching with. Two guys in some U.S. garb on my right. A family way up front.

And in his blue U.S. away jersey and some bright red Nikes, Spike Lee is sitting at the table in front of mine. He’s here with a friend, waiting for the game to start.

Families from across Brooklyn brought their Mother’s Day celebrations down to the new Brooklyn Bridge Park on Sunday. The fifth annual Spring Fling included face painting, children’s yoga, and live music by AudraRox down by the water’s edge. The event was co-hosted by the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy and the Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation. In this audio slideshow, three Brooklyn moms who were at the park reflect on the motherly advice they received when they were young.

Rich audio features and reports can become buried in the current blog format. A click-able, link-able map would be a more interactive way of introducing each piece. Because the web is a visual tool, it’s important that listeners don’t have to do too much digging.
